Experienced educational consultants in the Denver area commonly charge fees of over $4000 for two years of comprehensive help with college planning, and hourly rates well over $100. My official rate for high school juniors for a full range of services spread over two years is $3800, and unlike what many consultants offer, SAT/ACT test preparation is included in the fee.
I am concerned that members of my profession are pricing themselves beyond the ability of middle class families to pay, especially in the current economic environment. As a first generation college student myself who attended college on grants and scholarships, and graduate school on research and teaching assistantships, I very much want to “pay it forward” and help families out with reasonable and negotiable fees. Every year I work with referred lower-income and first generation students on a pro bono (no charge) basis, and I am willing to adjust my fees within reason for other potential clients. In particular, I will price my fees below those of equally experienced and credentialed competitors.
Something that differentiates me from many other Denver-area educational consultants is that I regularly go the extra mile for my clients as a part of my work. For example, I attend meetings with high school counselors, parents, and the student, so that all work on the student’s behalf is carefully coordinated; I travel and do college touring with clients whose parents have limited availability; and I work at arranging internships for students who could benefit from some additional experience and seasoning prior to applying to college. I pride myself of getting to know my student-clients and their families well, and I purposely don’t load myself up with so many clients that a personalized experience is an impossibility.
